Tree Removal Can Prevent Drain Line Issues

Posted on: 28 July 2023

Tree roots in a drain line may sound like a reason to call a plumber, and it very well may be. You may also need to call in a tree service, though, as the only way to permanently solve roots in a home's sewer drain line is to remove the tree that is causing the problem. This isn't a project you should try to handle on your own.

Root Invasion Symptoms

Symptoms of root trouble in a drain system begin minor and slowly worsen over time, so it's not uncommon for the problem to go unnoticed at first. One of the earliest symptoms is a simple slowing of the drain lines in the home. It may take longer for water to drain out of a sink or tub, for example. As the problem worsens, gurgling sounds may come out of the drains or they may slow to the point that the drains are clogged.

Backed-up drains are also common. For example, when the washing machine drains, a nearby sink or tub may back up. The smell of raw sewage may also sometimes come up through the drain openings thanks to the clog deeper down the line. In extreme root clogs, the sewage may actually back up through the floor drain in your basement or utility room.

Removal Challenges

Determining which trees are to blame for the blockage is the first challenge. Generally, it will be the trees closest to the drain line, but tree roots can spread quite far. Your removal service will also consider the rooting habits of all of the nearby trees to help determine the culprits, as some trees are more prone to spreading into drain lines than others. Species renowned for water-finding abilities, like willow trees, are an example of those more likely to damage a drain.

Your removal company may also need to know the location of the drain line and its depth prior to removal so that they can avoid damage. Your plumber or drain cleaning company may be able to mark this for you. The tree removal itself shouldn't pose any threat to the underground drain line, the concern comes when grinding out the stump. By knowing the location and depth, your service can take care not to grind too deeply and damage the line in the event it lies near the soil surface.
