Tips For Choosing Privacy Plants For Your Backyard

Posted on: 19 June 2015

Most people associate the front yard with being publicly visible and accessible and the backyard with being private. However, if you live in a neighborhood, it can be difficult to get that feeling of privacy in your backyard since you have neighbors on all sides. One of the easiest and most visually appealing ways to obtain some privacy in your backyard is by creating a natural fence with plants. Here are some traits you need to keep in mind when choosing which privacy plants to use for your backyard.

Evergreen Plants

If you really want privacy in your backyard year round, you need to look into evergreen trees and shrubs. Evergreen trees and shrubs maintain their leaves throughout the year, allowing you privacy even when the leaves start to fall off all the deciduous trees in your area.

In order to create true, year-round privacy, evergreen trees and shrubs are the way to go.

Dense Leaves

Not all evergreen trees are the same. Some have very sparse, spread out leaves. If you really want to block your neighbors from looking into your backyard, you should plant evergreen trees that have very dense leaf coverage. This will prevent your neighbors from getting little peaks into your private space.

Two examples of evergreens that have very dense leaf coverage are junipers and rhododendrons.

Tolerant To Trimming

Next, you want to plant dense evergreens that are tolerant to trimming. If you plant your natural fence close to your property line with your neighbors, you'll need to trim the plants to make sure that they don't grow over onto your neighbor's property. It is also a good idea to plant trees and shrubs that can tolerate being trimmed if you want to control their shape and size.

Fast-Growing

Finally, you'll want to make sure the evergreen trees and bushes that you plant to create your natural fence are fast-growing.

If you really want privacy, you don't want to plant something that is going to take fifteen years to reach maturity. You'll want to purchase larger plants that will grow quickly, so that way you'll only have to wait a couple of years for the trees and shrubs you planted to be tall and dense enough to provide you with complete privacy in your backyard.

If your neighbors' backyards run into yours, one of the best ways to create privacy is by creating a natural fence out of plants. The best natural privacy fences are created by evergreens that have dense leaf coverage, are tolerant to trimming and grow quickly, such as the African boxwood, rhododendrons, viburnum and junipers.
