How To Use Fire To Remove A Stump

Posted on: 6 June 2015

Most tree stumps are removed by using a tree stump grinder. Even if you do not want to purchase one, you can choose to simply rent one from a nearby hardware store. However, if you do not want to bother renting one, there are other ways you can remove a tree stump from the ground using fire. This is best done with smaller tree stumps and only if the tree stump is not nearby a structure that can easily catch fire.

Preparing the Stump to be Burned

Before setting a stump on fire, you will want to make sure that the stump is dry. Damp wood produces more smoke when burned, which can aggravate your neighbors.

Putting a Fire In the Hole

Begin by drilling a hole into the stump with a very large diameter drill bit. Then, you will want to fill the hole with the fuel you will use to ignite the fire. Only use fuel oil or kerosene. Do not use gasoline. Allow the fuel to soak in for about a week. Then, light and throw a match into the hole to ignite a fire. The stump will burn and will eventually be completely destroyed by the fire. Usually, you will only be left with a charred hole.

Constructing a Bonfire

Another approach is to take the upper part of the tree and chop it up so the wood can be used as fuel to burn a fire on top of the stump. Then, build a ring of wood around the stump. The goal is to make the stump the center of the fire. Then, start a fire and allow the entire construction to burn. Watch the fire to make sure that it does not get out of control and add wood periodically to make sure that it stays hot. As long as the stump is still there, keep the fire burning.

General Fire Tips

Before you start a fire, make sure you warn your neighbors so they do not complain. Choose a time to light the fire when you will be the least likely to annoy your neighbors. Regardless of what method you use, you will next want to shovel the ashes and dispose of them. The best time to start the fire is on a cooler day when there will be fewer neighbors outside. Also, always keep children and pets away from the bonfire. Since stump removal can be dangerous if you do not carry out the process carefully, you might want to hire a stump removal service.
